![]() ![]() Within the confines of the Clearing, a confined and contained community with The two main characters are Amy and Freya. This is an engaging crime thriller, so I can’t say much more without spoilers, but suffice to say that this book will hook you from the very beginning, and then slowly reel you in it will cause you to constantly doubt the veracity of what you have read and the creepy conclusion will ask more questions than it answers. ![]() The unsettling twists and reveals in this story continue all the way through, to the very last page, shifting our perspectives on many of the characters until we end up very far from where we thought we were going at the start of the book. ![]() But this is not the only surprising turn of events. About half-way through, there is a clever and unexpected twist that recalibrated my thinking about all I had read so far, and had me turning back to the beginning to re-read and reconsider the story. ![]() This is a truly page-turning and unputdownable story that will keep you on edge as the plot thickens, the tensions increase and the stakes become higher for all of the main characters. Pomare’s debut crime thriller Call Me Evie was good, but his next book In the Clearing (Hachette 2020) is even better, on a whole other level. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Favorite scenes are recounted unforgotten characters described. ![]() There’s a moment when the conversation turns to books, when my friend remembers her favorite, the one she read at fourteen or twenty or thirty-five, the one she still vividly recalls. When I ask women writers about it their faces light up: “I loved that book when I was a girl.” At other times the accolades come unsolicited, as I talk with a woman who is neither a writer nor even a particularly avid reader. ![]() The Hungry Artist: Rereading Betty Smith’s A Tree Grows in Brooklyn ![]() ![]() ![]() Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them. ![]()

How clever! How Weird! “It’s like, if Spielberg gave David Lynch a script and told him to go wild, but the whole thing still had to make sense, it would be Stranger Things!” I loudly shouted at baristas and joggers and other unfortunates in my neighborhood. “How is going to gore, or mutilate, or terrorize the (flat and poorly written) characters?” Frankly, my dear…Īnd yet, as so many afflicted with the Netflix virus, I sat transfixed as the Duffer Brothers unraveled their nostalgia-horror story, Stranger Things.
